Building Emotional Literacy through Emotional Regulation tools

If you grab a pen and paper and list the emotions that come to mind, how many would you capture? Your list is the palette you paint from when it comes to your emotions. The average educated adult lists about 20, nothing to be ashamed of, but a fraction of the hundreds available.

Expanding your emotional literacy is analogous to learning to build your linguistic literacy through reading and writing. Little by little you noticed that the words were composed of letters arranged in a specific way. A similar process works with emotions, but instead of focusing on written words, you notice your feelings and their relationship to stories and impulses.

Developing emotional literacy takes more than good intentions, it is a life skill and is available to all of us.

Why is this important?

Because every choice we make, every relationship we build, and every problem we solve is in part driven by our emotional understanding. There are emotions that shape what we do, how we do it, why we do it, who we do it with, and whether we do it at all. There is no part of life that is not touched by emotions which makes them essential to understand.

Emotional Intelligence is a given. We all have it. Ours might be high, or it might not be, but the bigger questions are, How can we take advantage of it? How can we develop this gift we’ve been given? How can it serve us?

EMORE cards are designed as a simple and intuitive way to expand and deepen our emotional vocabulary and understanding. Emotional Regulation has to be self-directed. No one can do it for you.

How can EMORE cards be leveraged?

EMORE cards can be used to identify an emotion you have difficulty naming, to build your emotional vocabulary and understanding, or to set an emotional intention for your day. Use them to explore and experiment with your emotional understanding. This is key to developing emotional regulation.
